Traditional Arts, Crafts and Trades Workshops Weekend at the Village!

On June 17th and 18th, the Village historique acadien’s team invites you to participate in their Traditional Arts, Crafts and Trades workshops.

Willing to share their “tricks of the trade”, our resident interpretive guides will accompany you through this unique opportunity to try woodstove cooking, carpet making or dishcloth knitting, or learn how to fashion a bottle-opener at the forge or a bailer at the tinsmith’s shop.

Workshops will take place simultaneously, both morning and afternoon, on Saturday and Sunday. See detailed schedule below:

Workshops descriptions 

1 – Introduction to Woodstove Cooking

On-site interpretive guide and instructor: Gilberte Lanteigne

Location: Thériault House

You will learn to fire up a woodstove, cut and prepare ingredients for a garden vegetable soup, a salted meat mash (also known as a mioche) and a delicious pet de soeur (brown sugar roll) for dessert. Designed as an interactive experience, you will learn sure-fire tips and tricks that will lead to a delicious and memorable meal for the whole group to enjoy.

Dress code: No open-toed shoes or sandals. Hair has to be tied back.

Number of participants: Maximum of 6 per workshop / 16+

Fee: $25 / person.

2 – Introduction to Carpet Making

On-site interpretive guide and instructor: Murielle Roy

Location: Château Albert Hotel, Dinning Room

With the help of traditional tools and rags, your instructor will show you how to transform your chosen frame and image into a take-home piece of art in this three-hour high-fun craft experience!

Dress code: At your discretion.

Number of participants: Maximum of 10 per workshop / 16+

Fee: $40 (including materials) / person

3- Introduction to Knitting

On-site interpretive guide and instructor: Lise Brideau

Location: Chiasson House

You will get the chance to be guided through the knit-and-purl maze of knitting your first dishcloth. We guarantee that you will leave happy, excited and eager to relive this experience at home whenever you like!

Dress code: At your discretion.

4 – Introduction to blacksmithing

On-site interpretive guide and instructor: Mathieu Sonier

Location: Blacksmith’s Shop

This workshop will teach you the basics of blacksmithing: how to light a fire and properly use a bellow, sort out different materials and adopt good posture. Follow our on-site blacksmith’s tips, tricks and instructions during this three-hour workshop and you will be amazed how easy it is to fashion an iron bottle opener… and maybe a nail!

Dress code: Work boots, safety glasses, hat, gloves

5 – Introduction to tinware making

On-site interpretive guide and instructor: Henri Robichaud

Location: Ouellet Tinsmith’s Shop

In this day and age, tinsmiths are almost as rare as a hen’s teeth! This workshop will teach you how to fashion cups, candlesticks and other traditional items from tin. As it is a rare trade in Acadie, don’t miss your chance to learn the ropes from our resident tinsmith, and perfect your skills while you learn how to craft a bailer.
